Cascadia
Grow Op

‘Cascadia’ was a sound based, site specific installation mounted in the Gladstone Hotel’s central stairwell for their annual show, Grow Op. Drawing on our species’ complicated yet elemental relationship with water, the piece features a multi-channel recording of a series of small, springtime waterfalls in the Humber and Don River watersheds.

In the hyper urbanized context of Toronto, our city’s watercourses are more likely to be seen, if at all, than heard. ‘Cascadia’ re-awakens our dormant longing for connection with our surrounding natural landscape through the immediacy of sound. A series of six speakers were discretely placed within the hotel’s central stairwell, each playing continuous audio recordings from different watercourses.
