Curating Grow Op

We’re excited about the upcoming seventh edition of Grow Op opening next week at the Gladstone Hotel, our fourth in the role of curators. This year’s show is the biggest yet, with over 25 projects across all four floors of the hotel. It’s a jam packed exhibition with events happening each day, April 17th through the 21st, encouraging participants to engage with the artists in the critical dialogues taking place around climate, landscape, and ecology.

What comes after the flood?

We’re back curating the sixth edition of Grow Op at the Gladstone Hotel in April 18-22, 2018. In the upcoming exhibition, we contemplate AFTER THE FLOOD. What lies beyond once the floodwaters recede? What emerges once the smoke clears? As cataclysmic climate events multiply in tandem with our species’ continuously expanding footprint, we are re-conceiving our relationships with the organic and inorganic world around us in unprecedented ways. The call for submissions closes September 30th.

The exhibition occupies a necessary place at the intersection of landscape, ecology, art and design, providing new ways of articulating our relationships to the urban, wild and rural world around us. Winter Pecha Kucha Stations

In her role as co-curator of Grow Op 2016, Christine spoke about several of the selected Grow Op artist projects as part of the rapid fire Winter Stations PechaKucha format evening at the Gladstone Hotel.
Her slides complemented the evening’s other presentations on the Winter Stations designers and their works, a series of temporary installations on the Balmy, Kew and Ashbridges Bay beaches of Toronto by designers from around the world and students from OCAD, Laurentian, and Ryerson universities.

On Collaboration

We recently shared our perspectives on collaborating as part of the 2016 Toronto Design Offsite Festival’s TO DO Talks: Collaborate and Listen Thursday, January 21st, in The Gladstone Hotel’s Ballroom. Central to our conversation was the piece we created for that space in 2011, The Ballroom of Sounding Light.
Along with Symon Oliver (Also Collective), Stanley Sun (Mason Studio), Steven Beites (Studio Kimiis), Viz Saraby (Invention Squad), and  William Haskas (+Collective), we chatted about the enriching and sometimes challenging processes involved in successful collaboration.

Artists Selected

We’ve completed our final project selections for Grow Op 2016 and to say we’re excited about the collection of work would be an understatement. Collaborating with a diverse jury and co-curator Graham Teeple, we’ve assembled a broad range of projects from artists working in the fields of landscape architecture, horticulture, painting, photography, sculpture, community engagement and all combinations in between. Stay tuned for details as we gear up to the April 2016 exhibition!

Seeking Submissions

LeuWebb Projects is curating the upcoming Grow Op 2016 exhibition at Toronto’s Gladstone Hotel. Grow Op is seeking proposals that employ the tools of art, craft and design to reframe our understanding of the shifting boundaries between urban and wild, culture and nature.

Can we use the lake to commute to work? Will local food be able to feed us all? What if pigs were our composters? How did that bear get into my backyard?

From community gardening initiatives to experimental landscapes to disruptive art projects, we seek proposals from individuals and collectives whose work engages with landscape, place and habitats with the goal of creating an experiential exhibition of high quality that is evocative and inspiring.

The historic Gladstone Hotel offers a unique venue to engage a large audience in a dialogue about the qualities and meaning behind the designed and altered landscape, from the condo balcony to the public square and territories beyond.

One of the most intriguing annual exhibitions in Toronto, Grow Op encourages an array of perspectives and dialogues that challenge our perceptions of nature, the built environment and our influences on both.

The submission call is open through to September 30, 2015.
